Farwell Miro District

Miro District’s last day of operation is Saturday.  We had purchased a Nashville Originals Gift Certificate and being the money savvy people we are (the word frugal and cheap come to mind), we jumped up and ran right down there to use it.

The meal started with a variety of breads.  The biscuits were brushed with bacon marmalade, which was marvelous.  The cornbread was a little sweet for my taste, but I think that is my Southern heritage.  The sourdough bread was chewy on the outside with a soft center.  I could imagine the sourdough could make a mean bread pudding.

For an appetizer we tried the Watermark Grit Souffle.  It consisted of unbelievably light and smooth grits surrounded by buerre blanc sauce flecked with mushrooms and bits of smoky Benton’s Bacon.  The bacon was thick cut and just crisp enough to add a bit of texture to each bite of souffle, while the buerre blanc sauce added a creamy butteriness that mixed well with the souffle and coated the meaty mushrooms with a little bit of garlicy, buttery, cheese taste in each bite.

The pig burger was an interesting conglomeration of ground beef, brisket, and boneless short rib (I never quite figured out whether the pig came from, but it was a tasty burger, nonetheless).  The burger was topped with caramelized onions and a fried green tomato.  The burger was on a soft bun and featured a good amount of juice and a very meaty, full flavor, and honestly could have been served without anything other than the bun.  The fries obviously had a good deal of attention paid to their preparation and featured a very crispy outside, but almost creamy inside.  Finally, both the burger and fries went well with the house made ketchup that featured a crisp vinegar taste as well as what seemed to be chipotle peppers.

The cross-section of the burger.

The roasted chicken featured an Alabama white sauce on a bed of potato salad.  I had a hard time with this dish.  It was good, but just didn’t compare to Martin’s roast chicken and white sauce.
