Nona Lisa Pizzeria

My friend Katie owns a lovely Italian restaurant in Watertown.  Now, I only write about great restaurants here, so this could have gone poorly for both of us.  Good thing that she makes some of the best Italian food in the Nashville area.

The Nona Bread is a mouth watering concoction of sliced garlic cloves and mozzarella cheese folded into a buttery pizza crust and topped with a little more cheese.  It is served piping hot and melts in one’s mouth.

I ordered the special which included the choice of a small salad.  The Caesar salad contained tasty house made croutons with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.  The dressing was delightfully spicy with hints of freshly ground pepper.

A friend of mine ordered the Caprese salad featuring garden fresh tomatoes and fresh mozzarella drizzled with olive oil and topped with fresh basil.  By garden fresh, I mean garden fresh.  Katie picked the tomatoes that morning.  My friend let me have a bite and I regretted my Caesar salad decision for a few seconds.

The chicken piccata had a very light lemon sauce with a plethora of capers, mushrooms and fresh parsley on a bed of linguine topped with lemon zest.  The chicken was baked and the texture was perfect.  The absence of a heavy breading really lets the light lemon flavor shine.

The cannoli had a spicy (Chai?  cinnamon?  She won’t tell me.)  cream  in a crispy shell topped with powdered sugar.  You can choose to have the ends dipped in pistachio nuts or chocolate chips.  I opted for both and the angels in Heaven sang.

Katie also let me take pictures of her garden while I was there.  This is the fresh basil that was on the Caprese salad.

Here are the tomatoes.

Corno di torro peppers

A lovely looking cantelope.

A Costata Romanesco Italian zuchini.

A Listada de Gandia eggplant.

Now here are just some pretty flowers that I couldn’t resist taking pictures of.  :)

Nona Lisa is excellent.  It is well worth the drive to Watertown and I suggest you try it.  :)

Nashville Greek Festival 2011

On Saturday we ventured out to the Nashville Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Church on Franklin Road.  The festival is a family friendly event with games and jumpy things for the kids and good food, beer and baklava for the adults.  This year the dinners and pastries were sold in the church fellowship hall, while the gyros and appetizers were sold outside under tents.  The organization of the food this year was excellent (we waited no more than 5 minutes in line).

The pastichio dinner came with Greek style green beans and pita bread.  The pastichio was made with long tube pasta, was full of liberally seasoned ground beef and topped with a rich béchamel sauce.   The meal was delicious and only $8.

The lamb platter came with roast lamb on a bed of rice, Greek style green beans and pita bread.  The lamb was super tender, seasoned with lots of olive oil and oregano (and lots of other things we couldn’t recognize, but were delicious).

For dessert, we mixed and matched baklava to take home.  Between the great goodies you can take home and the smorgasbord board of new things to try the Nashville Greek festival is a great family friendly activity!

Athen’s Family Restaurant

The Nashville Greek festival is quickly approaching (September 9 – 11).  To “warm up” for the festival so to speak, we thought we’d revisit one of our favorite restaurants.  We found the Athens Family Restaurant when we started dating way back in 2006 and visit it frequently.  They serve a fantastic breakfast, as well as traditional Greek food, if you visit later in the day.

The Pastichio features layers of pasta, ground beef and a variety of cheeses topped with a rich béchamel sauce.  There is a slight hint of cinnamon, which is delightful.  The dish is accompanied by green beans and Dina’s potatoes, which are boiled potatoes in a rich cream sauce.  Overall the dish is a very hearty, filling dinner!

Cary opted for the mixed grill platter, which came with grilled lamb and beef, a small Greek salad, Dina’s potatoes and buttery pita wedges.  The mixed grill is the perfect thing for you carnivores out there.  The meats change often, and include various incarnations of beef, lamb, and pork, prepared and seasoned in various greek preparations.  Always remember to ask for the Dina’s potatoes, as the cheesy, butter sauce that the potatoes are bathed in makes for excellent dipping with the pita.

Blu Fig

On a recent night out running errands, Cary and I were looking for some quick food to take home.  We decided to stop by the Blu Fig, a relatively new restaurant in Nolensville.  It features typical Mediterranean cuisine and a variety of smoothies.  They also serve bubble tea, which I found intriguing and will try on another visit.

The Dolmas are simply stuffed with the restaurant’s fragrant rice.  The rice is slightly savory, maybe having steeped in chicken stock, and features small bits of vegetables such as peas and carrots.  The stuffed grape leaves go well with the cucumber specked yogurt sauce.  While lots of restaurants in town tend to fuss with their dolmas to their detriment, these were a nice, simple accompaniment to the rest of our meal.

The Greek salad was an equal mixture of romaine lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes.  It was topped with several olives, chopped almonds and large chunks of feta cheese with a light citrus dressing.  The large amount of tomatoes and cucumbers made this salad very enjoyable.  The light dressing really let the vegetables shine.

The gyro plate comes with homemade chips.  They were thick cute and served warm with a nice seasoning salt.  The gyro was a mixture of romaine lettuce, tomato, and a cucumber like tzatziki sauce.   The pita was thick and held up nicely through the whole meal.  The gyro meat was shaved thin, which can be a good thing or a bag thing.  Many times, if it is shaved really thin, it dries out.  In this case, it was great.  The meat was moist and had a great pepper flavor.

The “duo plate” features both chicken and gyro meat on a bed of fragrant rice with pita and a small salad on the side.  The chicken was especially well seasoned and still juicy, despite the dryness some chicken dishes experience.  As Sarah mentioned, the gyro meat is sliced thin, but has a few crispy bits on the edges and is well seasoned.  We’re looking forward to trying more of the offerings from the Blu Fig.

Kalamatas

One of our favorite places to eat in Nashville is Kalamatas, a small Mediterranean restaurant with a health conscience menu.

We began the meal with a small Greek salad with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, Kalamata olives, pepperocini and feta cheese.  The dressing is a house creation that I haven’t quite figured out yet.  It is a thick vinaigrette that is wonderful.

As an appetizer we ordered hummus and pita wedges.  The hummus is lightly drizzled with olive oil.  It is slightly tangy and very smooth.

As another appetizer (we may have a problem…  the first step is acknowledging this right?), we ordered the Falafel, which is delightfully crunchy on the outside.  The Tzatzaki sauce that is the accompaniment is creamy and tangy with a hint of cucumber.

Cary ordered the the combo kabob plate with chicken, beef and lamb.  You can choose either rice or potatoes as a side.  Cary likes to order the rice and drizzle Tzatzaki sauce over it.  The beef and chicken are well seasoned and are tender and juicy.  The lamb is very similar to sausage with a very intense flavor.

I ordered the lamb gyro, which is a mixture of lamb, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and Tzatzaki sauce.  The lamb is very well seasoned and delicious in the pita.  The sandwich is so large, I split it with Cary.

Cary let me pick out desserts….  This may have been a mistake as I came back to the table with four. (No judgment, right?)  We tried a coconut Lebanese cookie, which is like a flattened coconut macaroon.  I liked this better than a macaroon because it has a greater crunchy outside to soft gooey inside ratio.

The tiramisu is wonderful!  It has a distinct espresso taste that is not overwhelming.  The cream on top of the lady finger biscuits is light and delicious!

In my mind, no Mediterranean restaurant is complete without excellent baklava and this is excellent baklava.  The filo dough is crisp with a light honey flavor, which complements the mixture of pistachio nuts and cinnamon.

A recent addition to the dessert menu is gelato from Nucci’s.  We selected the pistachio variety to complement our baklava.  It was creamy and delightful!

If you stop by Kalamatas on a Saturday night, they almost always have some sort of instrumental music, which is fabulous.  They also have take out and cater.  Now, after those desserts…  I think I’m going to go to the gym!
