I can't recommend the W540, other than to recommend you stay away. I was hoping to replace my W510 with one, but it didn't work out. I'm not sure what the designers at Lenovo are thinking. Where to start? They replaced the trackpad that had two sets of buttons with a single "floating" trackpad and no buttons. You can click the entire pad at different corners, sort of like a multi-way see-saw. Sometimes it actually produced the click you intended (left, right, middle), but most of the time it produces a click you didn't want. Far too imprecise. And no tactile dots to position your fingers to know the correct place to click. And the little light that tells you when the disk drive is active? Impossible to see. Why? There isn't one. I don't know if they were going for "clean lines" or trying to save money. But for me, it's an important piece of feedback -- when a computer isn't responding or is acting sluggish, my eyes dart to the disk drive as my first part of sorting out what's going on. Then there's the keyboard. IBM (who originated the ThinkPad line) used to be famous for keyboards. How the mighty have fallen. Lenovo went with one of the trendy almost chicklet keyboards. And then proceeded to screw up the layout. Reversed the meaning of the Function keys and the system function (such as sleep). Maybe I can see that. Then they just removed keys they apparently thought were superfluous.
The W510 had an annoying software problem: every once in awhile, instead of the screen timeout going to the ThinkPad login / fingerprint screen, it would just go black. You'd get a cursor, but have no way to log in. Only solution was to press and hold power, lose any work in progress and reboot. Not nice. Well, four years later and the W540 has the same problem -- and more frequently!
Maybe internally they're confused as to whether the W line is supposed to be a consumer-grade line or a higher-end workstation. Let me clear things up: they price it like a higher-end workstation but are now making consumer-grade design decisions. Buh bye.
I find this laptop to be very disappointing.I'll cover the major points:
First, this is not my primary laptop.I purchased this as a dedicated machine for a single piece of software. So the installed software is minimal and the dedicated software is not very intensive. The machine is running Windows 7 (not Win 8).
1.It is extremely slow. For having the i7 processor everything just runs slowly. It boots slow, updates take forever to install (not to download) and when anything is installing, the entire system is hijacked; you just can't do anything else.Part of this is the 5200rpm hard drive but since a 7200 rpm hard drive was not an option I'm lumping it into here.
2.The Lenovo software needs work.Nothing seems to hijack the system like the Lenovo checkup software. When it's running, other apps are just unusable.Spinning disk and that's it.Again, for a quad-core processor and 8Gb of RAM it shouldn't behave like this.
3.The touchpad and the touchpad drivers are horrible.I've had this now for a while and several updated drivers later it stills seems buggy. When you click on the pad, it feels and sounds like an IBM keyboard spacebar from 2000.What's worse is that you have to push past the click for it to register as a click. This makes the double-click worse. When you click-and-drag using the touchpad, the mouse pointer just keeps going even after you stop moving your finger.
4.The ergonomics are miserable. With the number pad included it actually shifts everything to the left.So you have a choice:your head can be centered with the screen and your hands off-center or you can be centered to the keyboard for touch typing but now your head is off-center from the screen. As for the wrist pad, since the touchpad is centered to the spacebar it is shifted over as well.Your left had feels cramped; there is just not enough room and I have small hands. There's this expanse of unused space on the right.
5.Who thought it was a good idea to waste valuable screen space with an icon indicating Num Lock?Just so they could remove a light from the keyboard?
6.The backlight on the keyboard is a waste. If it shown through the keys instead of just from the bottom of the key it's be more usable.
All in all I feel that Lenovo has ruined the Thinkpad name with this laptop.Poorly engineered from the hardware to the Lenovo software to the drivers. If I had to use it on a daily basis it would be gone but since it's used once in a while only I kept it.

I bought this unit along with a 512GB SSD and 16GB of extra RAM.I swapped the hard drive for the SSD so am using a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate.
Adding the extra RAM was tricky.Had to move cards around a bit before system would recognize all 24GB.
Drive replacement was easy.Again a little tricky getting OS to load but now that it is running it's fine.
Overall, I like the machine.Nice look.Nice graphics.Great performance, especially with the extra memory and the SSD.
There is one big negative and that is the clunky track pad.It is truly lame and does not belong on this or any other machine marketed by a self-respecting computer vendor.I spent two days on-site at a customer using only the track pad and it was painful.Went out tonight and bought a mouse.I've disabled the track pad entirely and do not intend to use it again except in an emergency.
One other minor nit is the function keys. The primary function on them is media related (brightness, volume, etc.).To use the F# key you have to press the Fn key with the function key.F5 is a two-button operation. The buttons SHOULD work in the exact opposite fashion in my opinion.
Find one to try first before you buy it.Had I done that, I might have kept shopping. Now that I have it though, it's not so bad that I want to return it for something else.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement but it is what it is.
